Housing: On Post vs. Off Post – What Makes the Most Sense?

Housing is always the hardest part of a military move. Fort Bragg is a large base, so most off-post housing will come with a 30 minute commute. Many people enjoy the commute as decompression time after a long day at work. There are several communities nearby if you’re interested in buying a home, and this is a location where your housing allowance may go further if you choose to purchase.

Becoming Part of the Fort Bragg Community

Community is key on such a large installation. Living on-post give you easy access to all of the amenities Fort Bragg has to offer: Commissaries, shopping, parks, pools, youth services, and childcare. As with most bases, there are numerous housing neighborhoods. Based on your needs, wants, and location, determine which location is best for your family. As with most locations at this time, housing can be tricky, so even if you don’t think you want to life on-post, it’s always a good idea to put your name on the list. Fort Bragg Schools

Fort Bragg boasts 9 DoDEA schools. This includes 7 elementary schools (PreK-5th) schools, one intermediate, and junior high (6th-8th). The two high schools are EE Smith (Cumberland County) and Overhills High (Harnett County). Your housing neighborhood determines which school your children attend.
